Last night Sonika and I saw Revolutionary Road. I don’t think either of us have been more depressed in our entire lives. Seriously though, we knew it was going to be an intense movie, but I think it surpassed our expectations. When I got home, I found my latest issue of Paste in the mailbox. A review about it was included and I think it did a pretty good job summing up our feelings on the film.
“The film’s skill at capturing corrosive romance is both its greatest strength and detriment- while frighteningly moving, it’s also the best example of birth control since Rosemary’s Baby.” That just makes me laugh.
“This film’s final argument is almost unwatchable in its intensity, like seeing your parents at each other’s throats on the brink of divorce. If this sounds like the antithesis of escapism, that’s exactly what it is. It’s a harsh, uncompromising look at the death of hope, and it does the job far too well. But to ignore its message because it’s difficult to watch would be a mistake- this is pure art as parable, with Oscar-worthy performances to support it.”
We ended the night watching Sleeping Beauty on the projector. I don’t think we could have picked two more opposite movies, but it was necessary for our sanity to watch an idealistic view of romance after such a hopeless one.
